Edward Wormley (1907-1955)
b. Rochelle, Illinois
Art Institute of Chicago
Edward Wormley began his career in furniture design in the late twenties. He was hired by Dunbar in the early thirties, a company recognized as a leading source of hand-made quality furniture, just a couple of years after a stint designing furniture for Marshall Field's design studio, located in Chicago. His designs were met with notable acclaim. He chose to continue consulting for Dunbar even after opening his own New York office in the mid-forties. He produced a well-known series for Drexel Furniture Company (the “Precedent” collection). Ensuing a commitment renewal with Dunbar, he produced the “Janus” series which afforded him international distinction as a premier designer and monetary success. In 1961, his designs were spotlighted in Playboy.
